“G” Is For Gardenia

This is a gardenia growing in my back yard.

Scripture references;

“10 How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices!

11 Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.” Song of Solomon 4:10-11 KJV

“Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.” Psalm 141:2 KJV

The five senses have always been a fascinating subject for me. They have a powerful effect on my mood. When I am doing my weekly shopping for items like shampoo or household cleaners off go the caps of all of the bottles. The scent of the product is always the deciding factor for me.

I love all of my flowers. Each of them is precious in my sight, but when it comes to the sense of smell, my gardenia has the biggest impact. Just one flower in a glass floods the room with magical fragrance.

The gardenia is a broad-leafed evergreen shrub that is a favorite of flower gardeners here in the South. They are not difficult to grow provided they have good soil (slightly acidic), a climate that doesn’t get too cold (In the United States you don’t want to go below zones 7 or 8), and plenty of water. There are a number of varieties, too. There are small ones that grow to be about 2-3 feet tall, and big ones that can get as tall as your house. There are a number of cultivars that will not survive a frost, so be sure to check the tag, so you know which one you are getting. Some can be grown indoors. I have never had one of those, but there’s always that chance that I might try one sometime.

The Church is often referred to as “The Bride of Christ”.  The Song of Solomon provides us with a beautiful depiction of the intense love the Lord has for her.

Notes swirling around

Never failing to astound

Sillage will abound

Its chorus will resound

My gardenia has been found!

This post was submitted as part of the A to Z Challenge, where participants agree to post an article that corresponds to each letter of the alphabet and publish an article every day during the month of April (except Sundays).

Here at Serenaded Softly, my theme for the month is Blossoming Verses, where I’ll share a picture of something in bloom, a passage of scripture, and a poem.

Scripture reference;
Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.10 How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices! Song of Solomon 4:9-10 KJV

To be loved like that…that is an intense love…and His children…His bride are one and the same. “We” are the object of the Lord’s affection!

Two Beating Hearts by Theresa Anne Moore

Lord, I know You survey
My heart’s on display
It’s useless to boast
It’s all in plain sight
All that’s wrong
And what is right
It’s falling all apart,
Yet hasn’t missed a beat

I fail, I fail everyday
I wander far from You
How do You Keep me in Your hand
I cannot understand
Why You love me all the time
Why You faithfully renew

I’m glad, I’m glad and so relieved
For all that You achieved
Nothing went to waste
Everything set right
I belong
I’m held tight
With all of Your heart
It hasn’t missed a beat

Scripture References;

14 My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi.

15 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes.

16 Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.

17 The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir. Song of Solomon 1:14-17 KJV

1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  Psalm 23:1-3 KJV

11 For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

13 And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.

14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.

15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God.

16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment. Ezekiel 34:11-16 KJV

“15 For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength…” Isaiah 30 :15 KJV

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 KJV

Lately I have been here at home working quietly and pondering much. I am thankful that the Lord has allowed me to do that. There is so much in our lives that is beyond our control…but we forget that. Then the Lord gently and sometimes abruptly reminds us, and in doing so we are given an opportunity to experience much needed rest.
