Scripture references;

And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.” Joshua 3:7 KJV

“14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 KJV

 “22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” John 17:22-23 KJV

Magnify is an interesting word. We like to magnify things that are small so we can see them better.

The Lord magnifies things that are small so we can see “Him” better.

Below is the meaning of the word magnify as it is used in Joshua 3:7.

Hebrew1431gadal gaw-dal’ a primitive root; properly, to twist (Compare 1434), i.e. to be (causatively make) large (in various senses, as in body, mind, estate or honor, also in pride):–advance, boast, bring up, exceed, excellent, be(-come, do, give, make, wax), great(-er, come to…estate, + things), grow(up),increase, lift up, magnify(-ifical), be much set by, nourish (up), pass, promote, proudly (spoken), tower.

Almost every time that word was used in the Old Testament it listed meaning #1431. Sometimes it is really helpful to look words up in the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, but when the definition is long like this one is we are still left wondering to some extent. We should not let that bother us, though. In a way it gives us more to think about…more to appreciate.

I find it interesting that both Moses and Joshua were magnified so Israel would know the Lord was with them. The Lord had appointed them as leaders to instruct them in His ways both by word and example. Israel needed that assurance that the Lord was with whoever lead them.

The world still needs to know about the Lord. He is not only “with” believers; He is also “in” them…and they are “in” Him. For this reason the Lord also magnifies all believers in the sense that they will recognize the Lord’s witness in each other. There will come times in the life of every believer when his or her sight will be dimmer and at those times the Lord often places people in our paths who are at that moment shining brightly in order to remind us that He is near, and to prevent us from falling. What a privilege it is to have the Lord magnified in us and to be placed by Him where we need to be, and when we need to be there; that He can actually do that!   :)

    This is a beautiful contemplation, Theresa. Indeed it is a privilege for a simple earthen pot to be able to contain such treasure.
    I also love how you can see the continuity between the Old Testament narrative and New Testament revelation!

  9. Heather, I am so glad you liked it. This is a re-post. I had written it a good while back, and then forgot all about it. Today I got an email notification that someone had read it and liked it. Then I read it again, and decided to repost it. I hope you will have a great week.
