Letting Go

Scripture reference;

1 Samuel 8 ESV

Israel Demands a King

8 When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”

Samuel’s Warning Against Kings

10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him. 11 He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. 12 And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14  He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. 15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. 16 He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men[a] and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

The Lord Grants Israel’s Request

19 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, 20  that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” 21 And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the Lord. 22 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.”

 18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John 15:18-19 KJV

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

We get things wrong sometimes. Sometimes people will forgive us and sometimes they won’t. Then there are times when we have done no wrong at all, yet we find cold shoulders on nearly every turn. It hurts deeply when that happens. However, the Lord loves us very much, and he brings people along at just the right time who will also love us.  We make things much harder on ourselves than they have to be. Let it go.  Look right over your shoulder! Isn’t that the Lord motioning for you to come near? He wants to give you a hug and whisper something in your ear.

Tender Moments

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

This picture was taken in the fall of 2010 when my daughter was 16. She and I went to Missouri with her older brother to help him get settled in for the semester. I like her in blue.  :)

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Scripture reference;

“1Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. 2And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there. 3And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. 4And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years. 5And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband. 6Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread. 7Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.8And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. 9The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept. 10And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.” Ruth 1:1-10 KJV

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

The story of Ruth is one of my favorites. Ruth was the one that actually ended up going with Naomi. The Book of Ruth is Short; only has four chapters. I wonder how things turned out for Orpah? I don’t believe she is mentioned again…at least not in that book. They both loved their mother-in-law, and she loved them.

This post is geared especially toward women…. mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and even close friends. Who has the Lord put in your life over the years? Who is there now? It really is a beautiful thing to have someone to love.  :)

Thorns

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Scripture reference;

“1And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. 2And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? 3Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD. Judges 2:1-5 KJV

28 We know that all things work together[m] for the good[n] of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those He predestined, He also called; and those He called, He also justified; and those He justified, He also glorified.” Romans 8:28-30 HCSB

“18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 KJV

“Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!    For His mercy endures forever.” Psalm 136:26 KJV

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Thorns. I think the meaning of that word is pretty clear already. I looked it up and there was the meaning “pricked” beside some of the other verses that used that word, but it was blank beside this verse, so maybe there is even more to it than can be expressed in words. I have roses with thorns of all sizes. They usually prick me on top of my hand whenever I reach inside the shrubs to remove those leaves that show signs of black spot…then OUCH! and I’m bleeding. Splinters are like that, too, and until you get them dug out it really smarts every time you touch the affected area. I cannot imagine what it would be like to try to go to bed with a thorn stuck in my side. I would probably get very little rest.

The Bible is just full of great analogies from the natural world to illustrate spiritual truths. There are times that the Lord tells us to do something, and He opens the door of opportunity for us to successfully accomplish the task. Sometimes we obey right away. Other times we procrastinate and the door suddenly closes and we are left with a difficult situation on our hands for a period of time, and in some cases for the rest of our earthly lives. 😦

It’s sad, but true. However, even then the Lord promises to never leave us or withhold His comfort from us. His mercy endures forever.  :)

Magnify

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Scripture references;

And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.” Joshua 3:7 KJV

“14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 KJV

 “22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” John 17:22-23 KJV

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Magnify is an interesting word. We like to magnify things that are small so we can see them better.

The Lord magnifies things that are small so we can see “Him” better.

Below is the meaning of the word magnify as it is used in Joshua 3:7.

Hebrew1431gadal gaw-dal’ a primitive root; properly, to twist (Compare 1434), i.e. to be (causatively make) large (in various senses, as in body, mind, estate or honor, also in pride):–advance, boast, bring up, exceed, excellent, be(-come, do, give, make, wax), great(-er, come to…estate, + things), grow(up),increase, lift up, magnify(-ifical), be much set by, nourish (up), pass, promote, proudly (spoken), tower.

Almost every time that word was used in the Old Testament it listed meaning #1431. Sometimes it is really helpful to look words up in the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, but when the definition is long like this one is we are still left wondering to some extent. We should not let that bother us, though. In a way it gives us more to think about…more to appreciate.

I find it interesting that both Moses and Joshua were magnified so Israel would know the Lord was with them. The Lord had appointed them as leaders to instruct them in His ways both by word and example. Israel needed that assurance that the Lord was with whoever lead them.

The world still needs to know about the Lord. He is not only “with” believers; He is also “in” them…and they are “in” Him. For this reason the Lord also magnifies all believers in the sense that they will recognize the Lord’s witness in each other. There will come times in the life of every believer when his or her sight will be dimmer and at those times the Lord often places people in our paths who are at that moment shining brightly in order to remind us that He is near, and to prevent us from falling. What a privilege it is to have the Lord magnified in us and to be placed by Him where we need to be, and when we need to be there; that He can actually do that!   :)

Foreigners

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Scripture reference;

17 For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God, showing no partiality and taking no bribe. 18 He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing. 19 You also must love the foreigner, since you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. Deuteronomy 10:17-19 HCSB

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

I couldn’t resist using this photograph. My daughter had this taken years ago. Her insight and sense of humor are really something…but we really should be mindful of those who are so often exploited here on the earth.

Foreigners…The King James Version calls them strangers. There are times when God’s instructions conflict with the thoughts of many. Who is it that we are to imitate? We encounter strangers practically every time we leave our homes to go somewhere, and sometimes they show up on our door step.

A Place of Refuge

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Scripture references;

” 9And the Lord said to Moses,    10Say to the Israelites, When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,    11Then you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the slayer who kills any person unintentionally and unawares may flee there.    12And the cities shall be to you for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he has had a fair trial before the congregation.” Numbers 35:9-12 Amplified Bible

” 1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2 KJV

Life can be so complicated, but the Lord really does care about all who are affected by tragedy. He provides shelter for all.

Hallowed

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Scripture references;

“31Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the LORD. 32Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you, 33That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.” Leviticus 22:31-33 KJV

“9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

 10Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

 11Give us this day our daily bread.

 12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” Matthew6:9-13KJV

John 17

1These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

2As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

3And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

4I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

5And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

6I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

7Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

8For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

9I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

10And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

11And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

13And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. John 17 KJV

HallowedIt is an old word. What does it mean? According to the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible the meaning of hallowed in Leviticus 22:32 is as follows:

Hebrew 6942 qadash kaw-dash’ a primitive root; to be (causatively, make, pronounce or observe as) clean (ceremonially or morally):–appoint, bid, consecrate, dedicate, defile, hallow, (be, keep) holy(-er, place), keep, prepare, proclaim, purify, sanctify(-ied one, self), X wholly.

And the meaning of  hallowed in Matthew 6:9 is as follows:

Greek 37   hagiazo hag-ee-ad’-zo from 40; to make holy, i.e. (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate:–hallow, be holy, sanctify.

The meaning of  hallow in Leviticus 22:32 is also 6942

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Some things never change. The Lord was to be hallowed back in the days of Moses, in the days of Christ’s earthly ministry, today, and forever. It is the same with His children. The Israelites were hallowed. The first followers of Christ were also hallowed and, so are His followers today, but the word hallowed was not used in the two latter cases. The Lord used the word sanctify instead. I am not an expert…there might be a slight difference in the meaning of hallow and sanctify. But I don’t mind being sanctified. Do you?  :)
